‘Before all of this I felt that birth photography was almost performative. I couldn’t have been more wrong! At the time you’re capturing something that you don’t even comprehend how important it is and being able to be transported back to that moment of when your life changed forever- is very special and rare. I look at mine everyday, multiple times per day. It’s framed next to my desk and reminds me of what is important in my life.
If we are blessed to have another child, I would be sad to not have this again.
On the performative front - I don’t believe it could ever have been. Intimate, raw, and exposing but there is no room for performance.
Birth requires letting people in and it’s a shame that we have all decided it’s ok to let the medical community in but we haven’t all agreed that we can let people in to document the most amazing thing we could ever witness.’
David, first time birth partner/father
‘I knew since getting pregnant that I wanted my birth photographed. It is such a major event in my life that won’t happen too many times, and a unique event in my baby’s life. I thought ‘’Well, the worst thing that can happen is that I will simply delete them or forget them if I don’t like them, and I cannot make them happen if I wish I had photos afterwards.” So we hired Hannah as our doula and birth photographer. It was a great decision for us. I didn’t even notice Hannah taking photos during the birth; it was subtle and smooth. And what we got are gorgeous, well-shot artistic moments of strength, of the collaboration with my partner, of the difficulty, and the victory that ensued. Seeing photos of the birth made me integrate the experience and feel invincible for doing that. And my son got a wonderful first portrait a few minutes after being born, which I consider nothing short of a gift.’
